Advance Payment Bonds – Protecting Upfront Project Payments
What is an Advance Payment Bond?
An Advance Payment Bond (APB) is a type of Surety Bond designed to protect funds advanced to a contractor before a project begins. If the contractor defaults or fails to deliver goods or services as agreed, the bond ensures the Employer can recover the advanced amount.
Also known as an Advance Payment Guarantee or Advance Stage Payment Bond, this financial instrument offers security and confidence for both parties involved in a construction or supply agreement.
Why Might You Need an APB?
In many construction projects, advance payments are necessary to purchase materials or secure services ahead of work starting. But this poses a risk to the Employer, especially if the contractor is a new or untested party.
An APB offers peace of mind. It ensures the Employer’s money is protected—enabling the contractor to manage cash flow without exposing the client to unnecessary financial risk.
In fact, APBs are often a mandatory requirement at tender stage, written into the contract to protect against early-stage non-performance.

How Does an Advance Payment Bond Work?
Before any payment is made, the Surety provider (insurer) issues an Advance Payment Bond in favour of the Employer, covering the full amount being advanced.
Once the bond is in place, the Employer releases the funds to the Contractor. This enables the contractor to:
- Purchase key materials
- Mobilise teams
- Prepare for the project start
The APB remains in place until the goods or services covered by the advance payment are delivered.
APB vs Performance Bond – What’s the Difference?
Although both APBs and Performance Bonds are common in construction contracts, they serve different purposes:
- An Advance Payment Bond protects the Employer against non-delivery of goods or services paid for in advance.
- A Performance Bond protects against failure to complete the contract or fulfil performance obligations.
It’s common for both bonds to be used together, offering complete protection across the project lifecycle.

On-Demand Advance Payment Bonds
Many APBs are issued on an On-Demand basis, meaning the Employer can make a claim on the bond without needing to prove default. This provides fast access to the advanced funds if the contractor fails to deliver as promised.
Aedis Surety can support both On-Demand and Conditional wordings depending on your contractual needs.
How Much Does an Advance Payment Bond Cost?
Costs vary based on project size, risk, contractor history, and bond wording. As a general guide, APBs typically cost between 0.5% and 10% of the bond value.
